Week 11: Progress in Software Engineering.

1. What did you do this past week?

This past week, I focused on closing out all of the user stories posted by our Customer team. I worked on the instance and model pages of our Cities models and remodeled the pages based on the requests of our customers. I also collaborated with my team on the sorting/filtering of the city model pages.

2. What’s in your way?

With the extension of Phase III, there is nothing in my way as I believe that we should be able to finish up the requirements in time. I think site-wide searching is a bit tricky to implement so I inspect that it will probably take most of the time for this phase.

3. What will you do next week?

Next week, I plan on working on implementing site-wide searching with my team. We are planning on using an external tool called Algolia to help in making the process a bit easier. I also plan on finishing most of my assignments of some of my other classes as their deadlines are around the same time as Phase III.

4. If you read it, what did you think of the Why getter and setter methods are evil?

I think the reading was pretty interesting as it touched on the consequences of getter and setter methods. I had to use getter and setter’s in some of the early CS courses and it was interesting to learn the how/why they could disrupt the overall structure of the code/software.

5. What was your experience of select, project, cross join and theta join?

I thought implement SQL relational functions in python was an insightful experience. Professor Downing did a great job of explaining the examples of how the relational algebra functions work and provided some hints on how we could implement them in the exercises.

6. What made you happy this week?

The extension of the Phase III deadline made me happy this week. I had other assignments due on the same day but the extension gave me some slack to work with when finishing the assignments and Phase III.

7. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip-of-the-week is to register for the vaccine by following the instructions provided on UT’s website: https://uthealthaustin.org/patient-resources/covid-19-updates/covid-19-vaccination
If you’re planning on taking the vaccine, it takes about 2–3 weeks to get the appointment set up so it’s better to do it as early as possible.
